Summer reading programs are back at Arlington’s libraries with fun activities and reading suggestions for kids, teens, and adults.
Registration for all ages opens Saturday, June 18. Children aged 0-14 are also invited to the Kids Summer Reading Kickoff Party in the Children’s Room and adjacent garden patio on Saturday from 10 to noon. Kids who sign up can pick up a free book, play games, blow bubbles, eat a Popsicle, enjoy face painting and more.
Kids can sign up for summer reading all summer long at either the Robbins or Fox library, and choose a free book to keep.
Track reading online
Kids then track reading hours with a bookmark chart or via an online form. Readers who return completed charts to the libraries are invited to put shapes on the walls and vote for our toad, woodpecker, or skunk. Special summer programs for kids are listed on robbinslibrary.org and the Round Robbins newsletter, available at both library locations.
Summer reading programs for children are a library mainstay. Pam Watts-Flavin, Head of Children’s Services at the Robbins Library, notes, “Research shows that summer reading is important to continue growth in reading from year to year.”
For Watts-Flavin, keeping summer reading fun is equally important: “For us, the summer reading program is also all about fabulous fun!” Summer reading at the library is designed to be a noncompetitive program that encourages kids of all ages along with their families to read for fun throughout the summer months.
Summer reading programs for teens and adults give everyone in the community a chance to join in on the fun. Teens and adults who sign up for summer reading pick up a Summer Reading Bingo Card. For each Bingo square completed, teens and adults receive raffle tickets to enter in one of our great summer reading raffles.
Summer reading is a great way to bring the joy of reading to teenagers."
-- Katy Kania, head of teen services
Katy Kania, head of teen services says, “Summer reading is a great way to bring the joy of reading to teenagers. Not only do they get to read whatever they want, they can win prizes too!.” Bingo cards for Teens are filled with fun challenges like “Read up on shipwreck that isn’t the Titanic” or “Listen to an audiobook with 'ocean' in the title.”
Head of Adult Services Linda Dyndiuk says of the adult bingo cards, “We included a variety of activities you can do to earn raffle tickets, ones that will push you outside your comfort zone and hopefully introduce you to library collections and programs you didn't know about. Having a summer reading program for adults as well as teens and kids means that the whole family can take part, and learn and grow together.”
Adults will see challenges that range from “Read a novel set on a boat,” to, “Watch a documentary on Kanopy about the ocean.”
Adult raffle prizes include items like gift certificates to The Book Rack, and the Capitol Theater, and the New England Aquarium. Teen Prizes include a tablet, an art kit and other prizes.
